Frequently Asked Questions for Teens

Please reach out to me from the  Contact Me page if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Most of what you share in an individual session is private. I don’t routinely share session details with parents. There are limits I explain clearly, including safety concerns, abuse/neglect, or court requirements. When parents are involved, the goal is to share big-picture themes, not details.

It depends on where you live, and what you want to talk about. Some state laws allow minors to participate in therapy without their parents' permission, and others require parental consent. In Texas, parents must consent to minor's therapy except for certain exceptions. Reach out to me through the Contact Me page if you would like clarification for your situation.

It doesn't have to be. When parents want you to participate in therapy, there is usually a reason. Something isn't going well. Therapy can be a great way to figure out what needs to change to get you and / or your family back on track, and give you the support you need for your family to hear your suggestions about how things could be better. I hope you'll give me a chance to help you see the possible benefits for you.

Individual Therapy is typically focused on the perspectives, needs, and goals of a single person. While others (parents, siblings, etc.) might occasionally participate in a session, the focus is still on helping the individual person get their answers.

Family Therapy typically focuses on the perspectives and needs of more than one family member, sometimes the entire family, to achieve a single, common goal. The therapist strives to ensure that every family member's voice is heard and considered in this format.
